Formatosi presso la Juilliard School con Sokolow e Graham, entra a far parte dell’Harkness Ballet (1967-69). Costumista e tecnico luci per Falco e Ailey, fonda un suo gruppo nel 1969, creando brani di stile schiettamente moderno come Whirligogs (1970), Some of the Reactions of Some of the People Some of the Time upon Hearing the Reports of the Coming of the Messiah (1971), Considering the Lilies (1972), Three Essays (1974), Marimba (1977), North Star (1978), Cavalcade (1981), Fandango (1990). Coreografo eclettico e di spiccata musicalità , lavora anche a Broadway ( Scarpette rosse , Il re ed io ) e per il pattinaggio sul ghiaccio ( The Planets ).
